Xico is approx. 10 km southeast of Coatepec; 20 km out of Xalapa. This is
the mountain paradise that the others only hint at. If you thought you had to go
as far as Costa Rica to ride a zipline through the jungle, you are in for a very
pleasant surprise. The high-altitude, verdant growth is as close as the Veracruz
highlands and you'd be hard-pressed to find a friendlier, more accessable place
to visit it.
As in all Mexican communities, life revolves around the zocalo. In Xico, the zocalo adjoins
the cathedral, so there is activity in the central area day and night.

There are plenty of lodging options, and most of them are quite reasonably priced.
What follows is a sampling. < align="left">

The top-of-the line lodging in the Xico area is, without a doubt, Agua Bendida.
This is actually a Spa, rather than a standard hotel. By definition, this means
a lot more service and a lot of other features, including massage and others you
would expect from a first-class Spa.

Of course, facilities and services like these don't come cheap. The posted prices for
the basic suite run a bit over $100usd per night and prices range up to the Royal
Suite at just under $300usd. While this is steep for lodging in Mexico, it's really
a bargain-basement price for the Spa experience and well worth the price. This did
not strike me as a facility where attempting to bargain would be welcome. For
reservations, call 01-228-813-1718. To see more about the Spa facilities, click

Between Agua Bendida Spa and the city of Xico, you'll cross a charming little creek.

Next to the creek, you'll see a charming lodging called Hotel Coyoapan.
The room rate runs around $30usd per night. I found the rooms quite comfortable though my
companions found a musty oder in their room. Check the room out before you accept.

The grounds are lovely.

Just accross the creek, the hotel pool area adjoins a group of cabanas owned and managed
by the Coyoapan folk. They are called Cabanas del Puente, but I haven't had much of a chance
to learn much about them for you on this trip. Maybe one of you can tell us all
about them...
For some folks, there is just no substitute for a lodging in town. In Xico, we found a
lovely hotel called Real de Xico. The Real is quite near the zocalo and directly
accross from the market, always a good place for fresh food and juices as well as merchandise.

Prices could hardly be more reasonable, with prices ranging from $30usd for a simple room
to $60usd for a Master Suite. The rooms are especially nice.

- Restaurante La Molienda at the Hotel Coyoapan - That's right, the hotel
on the outskirts of town has a nice restaurant as well.

- Just about ant time, day or night, in almost any town in Mexico, you can find something to eat.
This one is just a short block down from the zocalo, and we were gratefull to find it open
past midnight on a weeknight. Great tacos, by the way...

- If it's lunchtime or evetn earlier, go to the market. The mercado in Xico is especially
clean and tidy. The juice bar was outstanding for both fruit and vegetable juices. The various luncherias
produce such incredibly delicious smells you'll be tempted to eat at several.
