Xalapa, Veracruz

Xalapa, also spelled "Jalapa", is the capital of Veracruz state. It's located some 100 km inland from Vera Cruz on Highway 140 in the foothills on the way to Puebla. While not as high as Orizaba, its 1230 mts. (4000 ft) does lift sufficiently above the sometimes miasmastic lowlands to provide some climatic relief. Xalapa, home of the main campus of the University of Veracruz, is in the heart of coffee country. The main industries are government, education, and tourism, the latter enhanced by the presence of one of the finest museums of Anthropology in the world.
