Tuxpan, Veracruz

Tuxpan is a fascinating city with a very mystical feel. It is located on the Gulf Coast come 300 km north of Vera Cruz on the river Tuxpam.There is some variation in the spelling of the city and of the river, with the final constanant "N" in some sources and "M" in others. The river passes directly through the town and almost the entire city lies within four blocks of the river. Accross the river is another town named Santiago de la Peña. Commerce between the to towns is most frequently accomplished by water taxi. Tuxpan is the closest port to Mexico City and has a heavy traffic of maize and soybeans. Tuxpan is the headquarters for the Mexican Navy's Gulf Fleet. Pemex' offshore drillling platforms are built and maintained in a facility on the river between the city and the gulf.

The North veracruz reef system located near Tuxpan is composed of two main reef systems, the Tuxpan and the Lobos, each comprised of three distinct reefs. These are platform type reefs and range in depth from 3 meters/10 feet to 27 meters/90 feet. The Tuxpan group, comprised of Tuxpan, Enmedio, and Tanhuijo, lies about 12 miles off the mouth of the Tuxpan river.

The Lobos reef system is much less frequently visited as it is in the area of Tamiahua and requires a much longer trip from the service facilities. There is a very well-equipped dive shop in Tuxpan but I cannot seem to find the name and address. If you can assist with that information, I will be eternally gratefull.

Miscellaneous • Misceláneo

• Mexico-Cuba Friendship Museum Tuxpan was the point of departure for Fidel Castro's revolutionary return to Cuba. Displays commemorating Cuba-Mexico friendship are on display at Santiago de la Peña.
• Museum of Archaeology is located downtown. located near the center of town in the Casa Municipal across the street from Posada Doña Sol. Open afternoons Monday through Saturday.
