Tuxpan is a fascinating city with a very mystical feel. It is located on the Gulf Coast come 300 km north of Vera Cruz on the river Tuxpam. There is some variation in the spelling of the city and of the river, with the final constanant "N" in some sources and "M" in others. The river passes directly through the town and almost the entire city lies within four blocks of the river. Accross the river is another town named Santiago de la Peña. Commerce between the to towns is most frequently accomplished by water taxi. Tuxpan is the closest port to Mexico City and has a heavy traffic of maize and soybeans. Tuxpan is the headquarters for the Mexican Navy's Gulf Fleet. Pemex' offshore drillling platforms are built and maintained in a facility on the river between the city and the gulf.
