Talk about getting away from it all. Tamiahua sits at the southern end of Laguna Tamiahua, the third largest freshwater lagoon in Mexico. It is a small fishing village way off the beaten path. But it is a charmer and offers both freshwater and marine adventures. Along the seaward side of the barrier island that forms the lagoon, there's even some coral reefs. But you'd better be well-equipped and self-contained if you want to Scuba over them. Otherwise, the snorkeling is great!

Tamiahua is predominantly Huasteca and its restaurants are considered by many to embody the best of Huastec cuisine.

There are a number of lovely beached all along the seaward side of the 80 km barrier island separating Laguna Tamiahua from the Gulf of Mexico. There are several tiny villages on the barrier island with palapas furnishing refreshment. There are also some tiny villages on the islands in the lagoon, accessable only by boat.

    TransportationTransportación

There are local busses between Tuxpan and Tamiahua. The road between the two is quite good. If you come by rental car, you are advised to use the paved road from Tuxpan. The road from Naranjos should only be driven by off-road capable vehicles. It is a phenominal drive, passing through a Peregrene Falcon rookery, but it is quite rough. An off-road capable vehicle is also recommended for driving on the Los Lobos barrier island. Otherwise, visits to the barrier should be made by boat. Boat rides can be arranged in town.
