Host to our May, 2007 trip to Orizaba in the Veracruz Highlands was "The Gran
Hotel de France". While the initial construction of this lovely old hotel began
in the late 19th century, the hotel has been meticulously cared-for and regularly
updated. The lobby is in a side-room; most of the first floor is devoted to
an elegant dining room.

Frequently, there is music at mealtime; meals that include such delicacies as
an in-house prepared stuffed crab.

While using one of the computers furnished to hotel guests for internet
connections, I noticed some electronics harking back to the hotel's history, like this
old switchboard.
With the altitude advantage of Orizaba, air conditioners would be a waste of resources and
ecologically thoughtless. No mosquitos; few bugs. But the open windows dictate that the informed travelor select
his or her room with a thought to the streets. While we were there, a futbol victory by
the favored local team produced a rather loud parade. While I was unaffected in my room facing the rear,
I heard some minor complaints from some light sleepers with a room over the main street.
Speaking of the rooms, they were well-equipped and comfortable.
The parking lot is attended.
So if you're planning a trip to the Veracruz highlands, I heartily recommend
that you dial (272)725-2311 and make a reservation at this fine, old hotel.
