Miscellaneous
Anton Lizardo ia a small town just south of Vera Cruz,
Veracruz skyline from Anton Lizardo beach
out past Boca Del Rio.
While it is home of the Mexican Naval Academy, there is really very little here
for any but the serious water-sports enthusiasts. The beaches are wonderful with
plenty of palapas to accomodate your need for shade, food and beverages.

La Palapa gourmet beachfront restaurant
There are dive shops in town,

and their excursions leave from the beach. Anton Lizardo has closer proximity to
some of the coral reefs less frequently visited by the dive shops in Vera Cruz proper.

The reefs in this area are reminiscent of those off the Yucatán mainland - tongue
and groove with lots of spunges. But these reefs have seen far less diver traffic.
And they have lots of wrecks nestled in the coral.

Accommodations are available in Vera Cruz
to the north and Alvarado to the southeast.
There are a couple of small hotels in Anton Lizardo.
One ten room facility is
directly accross from the two dive shops on the main street into town. It's plain
and functional looking and even offers window air conditioners in some of the units.
The real surprise is one down on the beach named La Intimidad.
From the street side, it is most unimpressive.

But once inside the walls of the compound, you will find an attractive,
comfortable hotel with seven guest rooms. Two of the rooms sleep up to six
while the rest max out at three. All are walk-ups with parking beneath.

For reservations, call 01-297-956-0322.
Campamento El Rey, or the "El Rey RV Park &
Campground", is a short distance outside Anton Lizardo. It offers campsites with
power connections; a stretch of beach all its own; restrooms; hot and cold showers; a central pavillion with
a grill; a fire ring; and two RV dump stations. Telephone 52 (229) 921-1971 & 77 Fax: +52 (229) 921-2090.
The owner of Campamento El Rey, Sr. Jose Barraza, has recently opened
what has to be the closest eco-tourism resort to the Veracruz-Boca Del Rio metroplex,
CocoAventura. CocoAventura is only about a klick-and-a-half
from El Rey. It offers cabanas with private baths as well as a campground with
shared facilities; paintball field; recreational facilities including climbing wall;
jungle excursions; Level three whitewater rafting on the near-by Rio Actopan; and
scuba activities coordinated through my friends at Aventuras Poseiden.
like the campground, CocoAventura controls access to an extensive stretch
of beach. Telephone 52 (229) 921-1971 & 77 Fax: +52 (229) 921-2090.
Neither of Sr. Barraza's resorts has a restarant. But if you don't wish for your
meals to be "do it yourself", it's a five minute bus ride to Anton Lizardo or a half-hour
by bus to Boca Del Rio, either of which can ably hit the "sweet-spot" of your apetite.
La Intimidad also has one of the two gourmet-level restaurants in town, along
with La Perlita on the other end of the municipal beach. The kitchen was
sparkling, the dining room lovely, and the menu extensive. For reservations,
call 01-297-956-0322. For more pictures and a peek at their
menu, click here.
Please let me know if you have more information on accomodations.

- Rotisserie chicken, anyone? The Pollo Feliz franchise, more
frequently referred to by natives as Pollo Infeliz, has opened a restarant
in Anton Lizardo. Hey, the darned things wouldn't be so ubiquitous throughout
Mexico if they didn't make such delicious, habit-forming chicken.
- La Perlita, the big palapa at the far end of the beach, is the other
gourmet-class eaterie in Anton Lizardo.
- Mandinga Actually another small settlement on a lagoon between Boca del
Río and Anton Lizardo, there are several clean, attractive restaurants from which
to choose. Pick the one with the best music and prettiest dancers. Traditional
Veracruzano dishes.
- And then there are the taquerias and cocinos economicos found
all over town for a spot of quick nourishment and a flash of exquisite flavor...
