Alvarado is a small city to the south of Veracruz/Boca del Rio/Anton
Lizardo. It is the jump-off for the coastal reaches of the Las Tuxtlas. Beyond
Alvarado, you'll find the exotic towns of Montepio, Roca Partida, and Sontecomopan
before hooking back down to Catemaco. Alvarado is a city with a great deal of character
and feel. There's a local fleet of shrimp boats and an active harbor.
Much of the seafood served throughout Mexico passes through the pescaderias of Alvarado.
Alvarado is another of those very old colonial cities forever reinventing itself and forever
on the cusp between falling into ruin and complete restorative renovation.
The main cathedral and Palacio Municipal are great examples of the renovation of
centuries-old buildings.
Regardless of ones religious beliefs, the art in many Mexican cathedrals is awe-
inspiringly amazing.
The bus stops right downtown, next to some taquerias with very tasty product.
